Eagles fall to Sacred Heart

The Jacksonville Golden Eagles had little trouble with Winterboro, beating them 75-48, but lost to a talented Sacred Heart team 69-55 in the championship game of the Van Deerman tournament.

Sacred Heart played only six players, and one of those played for only one minute.

Sacred Heart used speed and hit 7-of-16 3-pointers as they outscored the Golden Eagles in each quarter of the game.

Des Curry led Jacksonville in scoring in the losing effort with 21 points. Sid Thurmond was the only other Eagle in double figures with 10 points.

Also scoring for the Eagles were Jacksonville Bell, 8, Dominique Thomas and Lavontae LaCount, each with 6 points, and Jared Tippets and Andrew Clingan with two points each.

The Eagles had an easier time against Winterboro as Jacksonville, leading 35-28 at the half, poured it on in the second half outscoring Winterboro 40-20 for the win.

The Eagles had four players in double figures. LaCount led his team with 20 points and nine rebounds. Curry, playing for only 12 minutes, had 18 points, Thomas 14 and Clingan, playing for only 11 minutes as he tried to fight of the effects of the flu, scored 10 points.

Six players, Bell, Dakota Doss, Elijah Cunningham, Martavius Brisker, CC Ryan and Sid Thurmond all had two points each.
