Col. Rickett died Friday, January 11, 2013, at Regional Medical Center.
He is survived by two daughters, Marie A. Gray and her husband, David, of Spanish Fort, and Clarissa M. Surls and her husband, Robert, of Largo, Fla.; a son, William F. Rickett III and his wife, Rose, of Watkinsville, Ga.; a brother, Raymond E. Rickett, of Hagerstown, Md.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five nieces and two nephews.
Pallbearers will be provided by the military.
Col. Rickett was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville and was President of the Friendship Sunday School Class. He was a former member and Past President of the Jacksonville Exchange Club, a member of the Retired Officers Association, American Rose Society, Past President of the Northeast Alabama Rose Society, Arbor Day Foundation, National Wildlife Association and the World Wildlife Association. He was formerly Professor of Military Science at JSU.
He served his country for 33 years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as well as Vietnam. Col. Rickett enlisted as a Private in March, 1947 and retired as a Colonel in July, 1980 and was the recipient of the United National Service Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal (7 campaigns), Combat Infantry Badge, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (2d Award), Air Medal (4th Award), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Army Commendation Medal w/First Oak Leaf Cluster, Gallantry Cross w/Bronze Star, Bronze Star Medal and the Legion of Merit.
Col. Rickett was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis M. Rickett.
