Lady Eagles rip Alexandria, Spring Garden
by Lori Tippets
Just days after relishing the win over Anniston that gave Jacksonville (20-4) their first Calhoun County championship since 2001, the Lady Eagles were on the court again, winning back-to-back victories in two days over Alexandria, 68-29 and Spring Garden, 48-38.

In the area game against Alexandria, the Lady Eagles quickly jumped on top 19-9 in the first quarter and played a stingy defense that allowed the Lady Cubs only three points in the second quarter as Jacksonville took a 37-12 halftime lead.

Jacksonville didn’t let up in the second half for the win.

Sharon Osterbind, hitting 7-for-8 from the field, led all scorers with 16 points. Osterbind also pulled down eight rebounds.

Virginia Poe, hitting 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, ended with 14 points.

Also scoring for the Lady Eagles were Angel Kidd with 12, Kenyatta Ervin, 8, Abby Jaskowski 6, Dasie Kirksey 4, Sarah Jo Harsch 2, Tamaria Mays 2, Darrien Martin 2, and Queenteria Mooney 2.

The Lady Eagles led Spring Garden 29-16 at the end of the first half but Spring Garden gave the Lady Eagles a run for their money in the fourth quarter.

Spring Garden’s ninth grader Madison Sides connected on three 3’s in the fourth quarter to erase Jacksonville’s lead to only four, 40-36 with 3:50 remaining in the game.

Kidd drove the lane for Jacksonville banking the ball off the glass for two, but Spring Garden hit on the other end to keep the Lady Eagles lead to four.

Two quick baskets by Ervin put the Lady Eagles up by eight and Spring Garden just didn’t have enough to overcome the deficit losing 48-38.

Ervin led Jacksonville with 15 points and six rebounds followed by Osterbind with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Poe added 7 for the Lady Eagles, Kidd 6, Martin 5 and Kirksey 2.
