• The Joy Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 on Thursday, March 7, in the Sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville. Muriel Phaff, from Atlanta will present a program on Lucille Ball. Muriel will be dressed in costume and discuss Lucille Ball’s life and quilts of that period of history. Everyone is invited to attend.

• Annual Honduras Medical Mission Yard Sale sponsored by FBC Jacksonville will be Friday March 1, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday March 2, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 230 7th Street Northeast, Jacksonville. • The Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium (RDPC) is making it easier for emergency responders in and around Jacksonville, Alabama to step into that role by delivering a free U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)-certified media awareness course that provides valuable insight into helping to understand how the media works and how best to work with available media outlets. This six-hour instructor-led course, AWR 209 Dealing with the Media: A Short Course for Rural First Responders, will be offered on March 9, 2013 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at Calhoun County EMA, 507 Francis Street W, Jacksonville, AL, 36265, giving emergency responders the skills and knowledge they need to quickly adopt the role of a public information officer if and when needed and to communicate with the public through the news media. Participants will learn both in a classroom-lecture setting and through group activities. Many rural first responder organizations do not have a full- or part-time public information officer on staff, therefore, making this training a valuable asset in learning more about building media relationships and effective communication skills in disseminating information to the news media. • Volunteers from the Calhoun County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will prepare and electronically file FREE Federal and State Individual Income Tax Returns at the Jacksonville Train Deport, 650 Mountain Street NW, during the hours of 9 AM to 3 PM, Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 29 thru April 11. These Volunteers are part of the IRS Volunteer Return Preparation Program (VRPP) and have all been trained, tested, and certified to prepare electronic returns by the IRS. Please bring all pertinent tax information (including last year’s tax returns), Social Security cards and one photo identification of some sort.

• Doris Haan has several trips planned for 2013. The first will be to Washington, D. C., March 21-26 to see the Cherry Blossom Festival and take several tours. The tour will depart from Gadsden.
