Anniston police today were investigating a refrigeration coil allegedly stolen by a former grocery store employee last week.

Anniston police Sgt. Chris Sparks said the theft was discovered when a man was pulled over on June 11 by a Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office deputy. Sparks said the deputy found a refrigerator coil in the back of the vehicle and discovered it was taken from Winn-Dixie on U.S. 431.

Sparks said the suspect was a former Winn-Dixie employee. The suspect, Sparks said, intended to scrap the refrigerator coil. The coil is worth $3,264.56, according to a police report.

The theft was reported to Anniston police Saturday afternoon.

Sparks said the suspect was not arrested by the deputy and Anniston police were following up with an investigation today.

The suspect could be charged with felony first-degree theft.
