Forty-nine American states have legalized home brewing of small amounts of beer and wine.

Mississippi — good, ol’ Mississippi — became state No. 49 earlier this year when its governor signed that state’s home-brew bill into law.

In the United States, home brewing is universally seen as a legal, safe, fun activity.

Then there’s Alabama.

Thus far, our state has said “No!” to home brewing. Previous home-brewing bills have died in Montgomery as opponents lump home brewing in with all sorts of social evils linked to the consumption of strong drink.

Pro-brewing activists believe this year’s bill may finally bring Alabama into the home-brewing version of the 21st century.

We’ll believe it when it happens.
