United Daughters announce scholarship winners

Major General Patrick R. Cleburne Chapter wishes to announce the United Daughters of the Confederacy Scholarships awarded to the following outstanding students.

Corey Smith is the Valedictorian of Ranburne High School with a 4.00 academic grade average. He plans to attend Birmingham Southern in the 2013-2014 school year. Corey is a natural leader who has been active in many school activities to include the Beta Club, Math Team, University of Alabama Physics Competition, Scholar's Bowl, Liberty Cup and Southern Union Scholar's Bowl. He has been voted by his classmates as the student "Most Likely To Succeed". His mother, Becky Smith, as well as his grandmother, Patsy Smith, are member of the Maj. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne UDC Chapter.

Ryland Lovvorn is a graduate of Oak Mountain High School with a 3.75 academic grade average. She plans to attend Sanford University in the fall of 2013. Ryland has been active in several school and community activities to include Girls Lacrosse – Alabama State Championship Team, National Show Choir Finals, Most Valuable Player - Tennis Team and YMCA Volleyball Championship winner. She is active in her church as a Soloist for the Youth Praise Band, Craft Leader and Home Improvement Leader for the Youth. Her grandmother, Joan Lovvorn, is a member of the Maj. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne UDC Chapter.

Alan Pennington, a 2012 graduate of Oxford High School, is a freshman presently attending Troy University.He is active in the Symphonic Band, the University Sounds of the South Band, the University Jazz Band, and the University Basketball Pep Band. He is a member of Phi Boota Roota, a professional percussion fraternity. He plans to continue his education at Troy University in the fall, majoring in Music. His mother, Cheryl Pennington, and his grandmother, Jo Howard, are members of the Maj. Gen Patrick R. Cleburne Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
