A mother allegedly forced her 16-year-old son to live in a tent for the last three weeks, Anniston police said this morning.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said a 48-year-old mother called officers to her home on the 1100 block of Comanche Trail Tuesday. The mother told police her 16-year-old son stole her cell phone, George said.

The mother told officers her son was not allowed inside her home because of the theft, but he could sleep in a tent in the yard, George said.

Police contacted the Department of Human Resources, George said, and through further questioning discovered the teen had been living in the tent for three weeks. The 16-year-old was removed from the home by DHR, the captain said.

George said this morning that police and DHR were still investigating.

The mother could face charges of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, according to a police report.
