The Heflin City Council Tuesday declared its support for the Heflin Industrial Development Board and pledged to work on economic development with other local governments throughout Cleburne county.

The board members are charged with developing some property the city bought near the Interstate 20 exit 205 in hopes of creating an Industrial Park that would entice business to the city. The resolution was requested by the board members after state Sen. Gerald Dial spoke to them about the importance of a unified front from all the local governments in the county.

Mayor Rudy Rooks, who attended the board’s meeting last week, also attended the County Commission meeting the day before to promote the resolution. At Tuesday’s council meeting he explained the work that the board did for the city and the county.

“We want word to get out that we’re moving forward, working together,” Rooks told the other council members during their work session.

But he asked that they also put their words into action.

“I encourage any of the councilmen, it’s the first Tuesday of the month, to come and sit in on the industrial board meeting and just see what’s going on,” Rooks said.

There has been work at the site since the city moved some heavy machinery there, Rooks said. The board is paying the fuel cost, but the city and the council members are providing the labor, Rooks said. Councilman Travis Crowe did some work with the bulldozer, Rooks said.

“You can actually ride around on the property now and see what we’ve got,” Rooks said.

In other business the council members:

- Approved appointing Marie Rhoden and Beverly Casey to seats on the Planning Commission.

- Approved reappointing Clara Roach to the Housing Authority Board.

- Approved a proclamation declaring May 2013 to be Older Americans Month.
