A man turned himself in at the Anniston Police Department on Wednesday morning on charges that he cashed a fake cashier’s check earlier this month.

Vincent Fitzgerald Ohara, 49, of Anniston, was charged with felony second-degree possession of a forged instrument.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said Ohara went to the AOD Credit Union on Greenbrier Dear Road on July 3. Ohara cashed a cashier’s check worth $2,499, George said. Ohara deposited $200 from the check into an account he held at AOD and left, the captain said.

George said the credit union later discovered the cashier’s check was fake and reported it to police.

George said was uncertain how Ohara obtained the cashier’s check or why he turned himself in Wednesday morning.

Police were able to identify Ohara by his account by at the financial institution, George said.

Ohara was released on a $10,000 bond from the Anniston City Jail on Wednesday. A court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 5.
