Thick, white smoke rose near McClellan Boulevard in Lenlock on Thursday morning as bright-yellow bulldozers cleared the way for a new 65-unit apartment complex.

City Manager Don Hoyt said the Ridgecrest Apartments will be on Centerbrook Drive, just south of Walmart and Tractor Supply. He wasn’t sure, but supposed the entrance will be on Hillcrest Drive.

According to the property’s previous owner, John Owens, preparations for the project began a week ago after he sold the land to Sun Belt Management Corporation of Albertville for $220,000.

“It’s going to be extremely expensive,” he said. “I’ve heard they’re really good at what they do. I’ve seen photos – they’ve got some beautiful places – and they’re a really high-class operation.”

A spokesman for Sun Belt reached by phone Thursday declined to speak about the project, but agreed to email a statement to The Star. The statement had not arrived by Thursday afternoon.

Hoyt said the complex will house residents with a variety of incomes.

Hoyt said the city originally thought the project would never happen because two previous applications for it had been denied.

“At one point we didn’t think the project was going to materialize but we were recently informed it was back in the running and had been approved by the state and the HOME Consortium board,” he said.

The HOME Consortium, a partnership among Anniston, Calhoun County, Jacksonville, Piedmont, Weaver and Hobson City, has donated $300,000 to the project. Money allocated to the state from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to help communities build affordable housing will cover the other expenses, Hoyt said.

Hoyt said he doesn’t know when the project will be completed, but said he expects it will cost several million dollars.

“It’s a real good project,” Hoyt said.
