Law enforcement officials, victims’ advocates and city leaders plan to attend a memorial service Friday for a 5-year-old Anniston boy who police say was beaten to death last month.

The service for Gregory Caver will be held at the Victory Headquarters Christian Center at 2418 Wilmer Ave. at 6 p.m. The Rev. Charles Gregory said he hopes the event will bring awareness to domestic violence issues and provide the community with resources.

The pastor said poems will be read, a youth choir will perform and a moment of silence will be held for Caver. Afterward, he plans for members of the community to speak briefly about domestic violence and child abuse.

Officials have said Caver was beaten to death with a belt on July 26 by his mother’s boyfriend, Vonta McClellan. The incident occurred at the house next door to the church.

“Help was right next door and yet we couldn’t stop that. We’ve got to be more proactive and do a better job to help our children and adults in the community in a negative situation,” Gregory said.

There’s a correlation that needs to be discussed between domestic violence and child abuse, said Telesa Stanford, a case manager at 2nd Chance, a domestic violence victim’s advocacy group in Anniston. A child is abused in 50 percent of the cases where a woman is involved in an abusive relationship, Stanford said.

Stanford will speak at the memorial to let the community know about the services 2nd Chance offers.

“I think we all have a responsibility to be involved,” she said.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said he’ll discuss the signs and symptoms of abuse, basic ways to combat it, and new changes to the mandatory reporting law.

“When dealing with a child that has no way to defend themselves and a lot of times has no voice, community is the only voice for some of these kids. It’s tragic,” George said.
