OXFORD – Putting rumors to rest, Commercial Development Authority board members said Tuesday an Aldi grocery store is planned for the city.

Board members discussed the Germany-based grocery chain’s plan to build at the intersection of Alabama 21 and Hamric Drive.

The board agreed Tuesday to transfer land at that site back to the developer, Holmes Properties, which had originally owned the property.

The CDA makes a practice of spending money only on land it owns, and the board agreed in May to pay $2.3 million toward site preparation there.

Two of the four tracts of land at that site have been transferred from the CDA back to the developer. Crews are building a Bojangles’ restaurant on one of the plots.

Aldi spokeswoman Hannah Dewey wrote in an email Tuesday to The Star that the company still cannot confirm plans to open a store in Oxford, but the CDA board also agreed Tuesday to send an environmental study of the site to Aldi for the company’s review.

Aldi will hold a ribbon-cutting on a new location in Fultondale today and another new store opened in Cullman in May.

Aldi wasn’t the only good news for Oxford Tuesday. A Milo’s restaurant is planned for the site of the former Shell gas station on Grace Street, just north of the Key West Inn. At a Planning Commission meeting Tuesday, board members agreed to allow the company to operate a drive-through at the location.

Milo’s has 15 restaurants in Alabama, the only state in which the company operates.

Attempts Tuesday to reach a Milo’s spokesperson for comment were unsuccessful.

“We look forward to having them in Oxford, Alabama,” said board chairman Bill Newman.
