A former Winn-Dixie employee was charged Thursday will stealing $6,000 from the store over a five-month period.

Stephanie Brooke Shelton, 26, of Anniston, turned herself in at the Anniston Police Department Thursday and was charged with first-degree theft, a felony.

On Sept. 9, employees with a Winn-Dixie on Golden Springs Road filed a police report stating they noticed discrepancies in their audits, according to Anniston police Sgt. Chris Sparks. The store discovered Shelton was creating fake returns and pocketing the money, Sparks said.

Police said the store’s video surveillance footage showed Shelton making the transactions.

A warrant was issued for Shelton’s arrest on Sept. 13. Shelton was fired from Winn-Dixie after the investigation, Sparks said.

Shelton was released on a $5,000 bond Thursday from the Anniston City Jail. A court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 21.
