An Anniston man was charged Monday as a fugitive from justice for failing to appear in a Florida court after allegedly assaulting someone with a deadly weapon in 2011.

Levon Harris Jr., 50, was already in Calhoun County Jail on Monday for a misdemeanor failure-to-appear charge. On Monday, he was served with a felony charge stemming from a 2011 assault in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., said Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson.

Details of that assault weren’t clear, Amerson said, because his department only received a warrant for his arrest from the Broward County Sheriff’s Department.

Court records state Harris failed to show Jan. 4, 2011, in a Florida court on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

“He’s from here, so apparently he came home,” Amerson said.

Harris is charged with being fugitive from justice, a felony. He was in the Calhoun County jail this afternoon awaiting extradition to Fort Lauderdale.
