In The Star

Oct. 7, 1938, in The Star: “Nearly all the farmers do their banking and other business in Anniston,” Wilbur Harris, a widely known Choccolocco Valley farmer, told The Star when asked to explain his objections to the proposed removal of several government agricultural offices to the former county poorhouse building in Jacksonville. “The warehouses are here and it would be a lot of extra trouble and expense for a man to keep running between the warehouses in Anniston and the farm offices in Jacksonville.” Harris will likely be in attendance at the county Board of Revenue meeting Monday next week when an enormous delegation of farmers plans to protest the board’s removal plan. Also this date: The Anniston High School band will appear for the first time in new uniforms at the football game between Anniston and Oxford at Johnston Field tonight. The uniforms, which were purchased by public subscription, arrived this morning. The new uniforms feature red coats with black piping and black trousers with red piping. Additionally: Alexandria Methodist Church will celebrate its 100th anniversary as a congregation in special services Sunday. The Rev. Thad Ferrell is pastor.

Oct. 7, 1988, in The Star: Ohatchee businessman Gerald Acker and former Anniston Mayor Gertrude Williams were honored Thursday night as Calhoun County's top industrial developers of the year. Acker was given the Thomas E. Kilby Sr. Award for his efforts to attract more industry to Calhoun County, and Mrs. Williams received the Kilby Award for the most active retiree. Both awards were given at a banquet that served as the climax of “Industry and Commerce on Parade” week, sponsored by the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce. Bill Andrews, manager of industrial affairs for the chamber, said Acker has worked tirelessly to entice more business into this area, but Acker offered nothing but a concise acceptance speech after receiving the award: “From an old country boy from Ohatchee — thank you. That's all I've got to say.”
