Volleyball roundup: Oxford, Donoho, Jacksonville advance

Play in the North and South volleyball super regionals began Friday, with teams needing to win to advance to Saturday's play.

Defending state champion Donoho advanced with a win in the single-elimination Class 1A South Super Regional. Meanwhile, in the North Super Regional in Huntsville, Oxford survived a 6A first-round match, while Jacksonville advanced in 4A.

Class 1A

Playing in Montgomery, Donoho defeated Fruitdale 25-14, 25-2, 25-8 included a sluggish start that included trailing midway through the first set. After waking up after the first set, Donoho took control and handled business.

The win advanced Donoho to the quarterfinals against Kinston on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Rylee Segrest finished the Friday’s win with 34 assists, three digs and 11 aces, including serving the first 18 points of the second set.

Corey Phillis and Camille Fink each had 11 kills. Phillis added four digs and four aces. Kayla Wallace finished with six kills.

Also in Montgomery, Sacred Heart lost to St. Luke’s 25-12, 25-12, 25-14 in a first-round match.

Zainab Sanusi had eight kills to lead Sacred Heart, which made it to regionals despite rebuilding a roster that lost six seniors from a year ago. Kristen Rothwell added five kills, and Anna Kerper contributed 10 assists.

Sacred Heart finished the season 13-17.

Class 2A

Playing in the North Super Regional, Area 12 champion Pleasant Valley fell to Area 15 runner-up Lexington 25-22, 25-21, 25-11.

Ohatchee saw its season come to an end with a 25-10, 25-13, 22-25, 25-11 loss to Lexington.

Class 3A

In Huntsville, Saks saw its season end, falling to Good Hope 25-11, 25-15, 25-13.

Taylor Teague led the Wildcats with nine kills, six digs and three aces. Mya Northard added three kills and three blocks, and Jordan Briskey finished with six digs and three kills.

Also in Huntsville, White Plains had its hand full with Danville, falling in the first round 25-7, 25-14, 25-13.

Taylor Snellgrove led the Wildcats with five kills, and Sophia Taylor added three kills and four digs. Lauren Mueller finished with six assists, and Haley Helms had four digs.

Class 4A

Area 11 champion Jacksonville opened with a 25-23, 25-15, 25-14 victory over Central-Florence, which was the Area 16 runner-up.

The Golden Eagles will play again today against Priceville, which survived a 23-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-16, 19-17 victory over Crossville.

Class 6A

Oxford, the Area 13 champion, opened play in the North Super Regional by defeating Area 10 runner-up Minor 25-17, 20-25, 25-15, 25-20.

It marked a reversal of fortune for Oxford, which lost in the opening round a year ago. Oxford (28-22) will play again Saturday at noon against Huntsville, which swept Northridge in the first round.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Lexi Higgins, who finished 12 kills, and Breanna Nolan’s performance, finishing with eight digs, six kills and seven aces. Morgan Whaley had 17 assists while Katey Skinner had 10.
