Anniston and greater Calhoun County, with the former Fort McClellan, the Anniston Army Depot and the Alabama National Guard training areas, are part of the heritage. The number of military retirees who proudly live here in northeast Alabama offer proof.
Today, more than 400,000 veterans of the varied branches of the U.S. military reside in Alabama. Three-quarters of those are wartime veterans. Though America is quickly losing its aging World War II veterans, more than 20,000 live in our state.
