Last weekend’s rains put a damper on Anniston Museum of Natural History’s Christmas in the Gardens walking tour, but visitors have reason to be sunny and cheerful.

The tour — which was to be open this Friday and Saturday only – has been expanded by two days.

“Since we did have the rain-out, we added Thursday and Sunday,” said Cheryl Bragg, executive director of the museum.

More than 150 visitors turned out for the inaugural tour Nov. 29, walking from the museum to the Longleaf Botanical Gardens, listening to live Christmas music among colorful arrays of lights and decorations along the way.

The tour also gives visitors the opportunity to see live animals up close at the museum’s Critter Castle, and to write and mail letters to Santa at Peppermint Palace.

At the Berman Museum of World History, visitors can sit on Santa’s lap, order popcorn and cider or try their aim in the museum’s BB-gun range.

Inside the former Lenlock Community Center gym, visitors can purchase locally made Christmas decorations and vote for their favorite holiday-decorated doors.

“We have activities for children and beautiful lights and decorations, and a lot of photo opportunities,” Bragg said.

Tours are scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, ending Dec. 15. The last admission to the tour is taken at 7:30 p.m. each night to finish the event by 8 p.m.

Admission is $10 per carload and golf carts are available for those who cannot make the walk.
