The state Legislature has time to protect the phrase “Merry Christmas” and to make sure Alabama farmers have no one to pick their crops, so why can’t lawmakers do the honorable and humane thing and make sterilization of dogs and cats mandatory?
I have no problem with licensing my dogs and cats, showing proof they have had their rabies shot and are fixed. Regulate the puppy mills and backyard breeders. If you are not going to spay or neuter your dogs, pay for the privilege. You are making money off the puppies. The legislators are missing a good source of income.
Unfortunately, the people who don’t care for their animals will dump them instead of paying the fines, but they are dumping the poor animals anyway. We have an animal vehicle to take southern animals up north where supposedly licensing and sterilizations are mandatory, since they don’t have enough adoptable animals. Spaying or neutering does change an animal’s personality. You have an animal that wants to be with you, not out “tomcatting.”
When you adopt an animal, that animal becomes part of your household and dependent upon you for care and love. Just like those who think a child is an accessory, so are the ones who think their animals are, too.
And, yes, I have put my home where my mouth is. One dog was thrown out of a truck as a pup and two are shelter dogs. The cats are shelters and dumpees.
